Forager Trip Info:
A quick summary of last years foraging results...

Although I have picked saffron milk caps in local woodland all my life (thanks to a Polish grandma), it was only last year that I broadened my search (after a fair bit of research, spore printing and so on) to include other tasty targets.

First surprse find was in early July. On holiday in south west ireland, me and my brother stumbled across a huge patch of perfect chantarelles. Good start!

In august, back in the North west and North Wales some boletes were being found. These were mostly bay boteles, no ceps yet though. BOO! On the up side I found a few shaggy parasols. fried and battered with breadcrumbs they were very tasty

September yielded a good crop of saffron milk caps which were enjoyed on toast, fried in butter with onions by me and some very trusting friends. (lets face it, If you dont know better, these bright orange mushrooms look pretty evil)

October was great! I found a huge wad of wood blewitts that kept coming up for weeks. They smelt great, were nearly entireley maggot free and went into a load of dishes - enjoyed my myself and the same very trusting friends.

Also in october I got some ink caps (still not worked out what to do with them),

Found some jews ears (good in stir-frys on account of their unusual texture and mild taste)

...and my one.... and only, cep! A beauty. Shame it was on its own tho. dried this fella and used it to flavor some pasta dishes (no friends allowed for this one).

The year ended with some porcalein mushrooms and velvet shanks that I again didnt know what to do with and ended up chucking.

fingers crossed for some morels and st georges mushrooms in spring.

Wild Mushroom Identification - Recommended Books for All Skill Levels:
Every amateur mycologist should have a decent library of books, here are the top five books I highly recommend for wild mushroom identification:

1) Field Guide to Edible Mushrooms of Britain and Europe  - Great layout with superb images - Peter Jordan
2) Mushroom Picker's Foolproof Field Guide  - A good all round book - Peter Jordan
3) The Mushroom Book - This one is a proper belter with loads and loads of good technical data - Thomas Laessoe
4) Complete Mushroom Book: The Quiet Hunt  - A lovely book by a lovely man. Antonio Carluccio
5) The River Cottage Handbook - Mushrooms - Always a favourite from Hugh's fungi specialist friend, John Wright

It is important to have at least 3 books so you can cross reference and cover as many species as possible

Hi
I am very new to foraging for wild mushrooms. I am from Bromborough on the Wirral. I would welcome any hints or tips.
My success ar limited to shaggy parasol and shaggy ink cap mushrooms, but I am eager to find more and keen to learn.
Many thanks
Philip
