Hi

I have tried to use my 'collins gem' mushroom book to id these but have been really struggling to pin it down. Unfortunately the local kids have now kicked all but a few out of the ground. They are growing in grass just under some trees in open parkland. The photos are all of the same crop, the large mature one is at least 15cm in diameter. The small one is around 6-8cm. The gills are a yellow / creamy colour and in the younger ones crowded and . They smell quite 'shroomy' and not unpleasant at all. The surface is smooth, shiny and dry. I would really appreciate any help in unravelling our little mystery.

Wild Mushroom Identification - Recommended Books for All Skill Levels:
Every amateur mycologist should have a decent library of books, here are the top five books I highly recommend for wild mushroom identification:

1) Field Guide to Edible Mushrooms of Britain and Europe - Great layout with superb images - Peter Jordan

2) Mushroom Picker's Foolproof Field Guide - A good all round book - Peter Jordan

3) The Mushroom Book - This one is a proper belter with loads and loads of good technical data - Thomas Laessoe

4) Complete Mushroom Book: The Quiet Hunt - A lovely book by a lovely man. Antonio Carluccio

5) The River Cottage Handbook - Mushrooms - Always a favourite from Hugh's fungi specialist friend, John Wright

It is important to have at least 3 books so you can cross reference and cover as many species as possible

Many thanks for your post and the heads up on the roll-rim. Despite being in my mushroom id book it didn't really lead me to this. Upon reflection is does have some of the characteristics. i have now search on google to see other pictures and again some look like it and some don't. i have seen definite roll rims before, however the dry and smooth surface and probably the fact that the inner dip in the centre wasn't present meant this little beastie certainly confused the begginer in me. Many thanks again. Simon
