Well so far in 2010 we have seen one of the sparsest years for a long time. I was in correspondence with my friend, (Geoff Dann who some of you may have had contact with on this site, he does a great job of helping other users try to identify what they have found.) He was saying how low yielding this year has been (due to lack of rain), certainly in the South and South East we have seen hardly any of the regular fungi we normally see.
It is not all doom on the Fungi front, it will only take a few days of light rain or a few good downpours and they will be coming up all over the place. The ground must be bursting at the seams with fungi mycellium awaiting rain!
Please keep your finds coming, keep us informed on what you have found (using the feature on the left of the page - "Post Foraging Trip" ) We will try to help identify Fungi if you are not sure but please post your finds anyway, especially if you know what you have. You do not need to give specific locations away, just share your stories for other to enjoy.
On another note, I have been asked to review a new Mushroom book coming out soon, I am just waiting for my copy to arrive from the publishers, when I have reviewed it I will post the review on this site.
September/October should be bumper if its wet.
Don't forget there is more to foraging than just Fungi, there are still wild foods in the countryside to be enjoyed, I recently had some wonderful Cherrys however they are on their way out now that the birds have had the best of them, here is a page with some pointers to what you can find in some parts at some times of the year (apologies that some of the layout in the table is a bit skew but you get the general idea)
Happy Foraging! |
