The Fungi Are Here!!!!! AT LAST!
I went out for a forage this weekend and found one or two fungi, including a nice Cep and a Common Funnel. Our resident wild food expert, Geoff has been out and about and had much mroe success. read his latest fantastic and ever-insightful article here
The website has had a record weekend in terms of people visiting so I just wanted to take a moment to hand out some good old common sense advice and also a few words of warning to all newbies. This site is run to help people learn about wild mushrooms and hopefully connect people together who have a common interest. I have set up a facebook page - its called "Wild Mushroom and Wild Food Foraging" please go ahead and join it - it does not have much on it at present but will have in the future.
So - I just wanted to state a few things about collecting wild mushrooms, now like most people who love wild mushrooms, it is hard to learn about them without picking them, slicing them, taking spore prints etc - however there is a problem. With so many people now taking up foraging as a hobby, some parts of the UK are getting a but over harvested. It is possible to identify some wild mushrooms without picking them, I suggest always taking a couple of field guides with you. If you have to pick, please try to limit picking where you find numerous fungi and never just pick at random as you could be picking something quite rare.
Picking a wild mushroom does not kill the fungi, the mushroom is just the fruiting body (the mycelium under ground are actually the main part of the animal) but if the fruiting body has not dropped its spores then it will limit the chance of more fungi being produced the following years. Here are some rules to follow:
- Pick only if there are lots of the same
- Never rip from the ground, always cut the stem
- If you find a troop of edible fungi, never colelct all of them, rule of thumb: only take 25% maximum
- Don't pick commercially, it's against the law
- Treat wild mushrooms like any wild food. It's supply is governed mainly by how much is harvested. take too much and we all suffer.
- NEVER eat anything unless you are 100% sure you know what it is - always consult more than one reference
Remeber this - without Fungi, there would be no decomposition - our countryside would be a very different place so treat with respect.
